Neuroscience Journalist Maia Szalavitz
Maia Szalavitz is a neuroscience journalist and author from upstate New York. She attended Columbia University for Undergrad where she studied Psychology.
She has blogged for the Huffington Post, written for the New York times, Washington Post, and many other major publications. Her most recent book titled Unbroken Brain which is a New York Times best seller. Maia focuses on science, public health, and addiction treatment.
Maia says that the best definition we have for addiction is compulsive behavior including impulsive drug use that occurs, despite negative consequences.
Maia believes that people with addiction are already loosing so much if not everything, why would additional consequences, shame, and guilt help that, especially coming from loves ones. If anything it will only make the person struggling with addiction worse she says.
